“Why wasn’t she answering?” Bill for weeks had been trying to call and for weeks he kept receiving a voice mail. Was something wrong? Had he done something wrong? Was she upset that they were found in the woods together? She did not seem to care at the time. Bill even thought she looked sort of proud that they were discovered. These thoughts raced inside his head for days. He needed to talk to her. The last time they spoke was shortly after they were found together. When they said their goodbyes Bill was sure she was happy, even glowing, he had never seen her so content and pleased in all his life, so what happened?
After trying for the third time that day Bill placed the phone down and ran his fingers through his hair. He laid back in the armchair trying to short out his mind. He tried to focus on other things like college or the television, but the only thing he could focus on was Jewel Diamond. He sighed reminiscing on their last time they were together; he never knew he could love someone so much as when he was with Jewel. He could not explain it, to most they seemed like a very unlikely couple, but she brought out the best in him. She brought life into Bill’s rather plain existence. She was his everything. Slowly Bill began drift in and out of sleep until he gave up and fell into a quiet slumber.
The loud eruptive noise quickly pulled Bill out of his sleep. Dazed and confused he still could not place where and what the sound was. He rubbed his eyes and focused on the noise. With sudden realization Bill raced to the phone and quickly answered it.
“Hello?!” Bill practically shouted
“Bill?” came a soft sound at the end
“Jewel? Oh Jewel I’m so glad to hear from you, I was getting worried that something …” Bill trailed off after hearing a choked sob at the other end. Bill’s excitement vanished and fear and worry replaced it.
“Jewel? Are you all right? What’s wrong?” Bill asked softly. A few more sobs and heavy breathing followed. After a few minuets of this and Bill trying to soothe her she responded. “I need you to come over, we need to talk”
“Of course, I will be right over.” Bill replied and hung up the phone. He sunk into the chair. What could cause Jewel to react in such a way? Jewel was always prone to over react but there was something different in her voice, true pain. Bill only assumed the worst. With her rejecting his phone calls and tearfully saying, “we need to talk” Bill could only add it up to she was breaking up with him. Bill’s very core was shaken, he loved Jewel, and he was ready to marry her. He had given, quiet literally, everything to her, and now she wanted out? Trying to remain strong he summoned up his courage and headed to her place.
When Bill arrived at the door he could not bring himself to knock. He was not sure if he was ready to hear the bad news. After a few moments Bill took a deep breath and knocked on the door. Shortly after, the door opened to a very disheveled Jewel. Her eyes were red, her hair a mess, and she was only in a tank top and sweats. With one look at Bill she began to burst into tears and much to Bill’s astonishment she grabbed him in and threw her arms around him crying into his chest. Reluctantly he too rapped his arms around her hoping not to upset her more and in truth he missed her warmth.
After some time of this Bill broke the silence.
“Jewel, what is it you needed to talk to me about?” The seriousness in his tone caused Jewel to look up at him in confusion, and then more tears filled her eyes and she went back into snuggling into his chest.
“Oh Bill,” She sobbed into his shirt “I have no idea how to tell you this, and I don’t know whether to be sad or happy, I don’t know where to start!” Bill, although sure she had found someone else, felt his heart break at the sad sight of Jewel in his arms. Regretting his harsher tone with her, he embraced her tightly and softly stroked her hair, hushing to her softly until she calmed down a bit.
“Here lets go into the living room where we can sit and you can tell me what you needed to say.” She pulled away from him gave a faint smile and nodded quietly. She led them into the room and had Bill sit next to her on the sofa. Jewel pulled her knees up and hugged her legs not looking into Bill’s eyes. Bill quietly stared at Jewel trying to think of responses to the dreadful news he was sure he was going to hear. As Jewel searched her mind for the right words, Bill continued to stare at her. He knew he should be mad at her and should loath to even look at her but Bill could not do it. Even in her disheveled state she was the most beautiful and wonderful person he has ever come to know.
Jewel let out a deep sigh pulling Bill out of his haze. She looked at him with tears still brewing at the bottom of her eyes.
“Bill, no matter what I say promise me you won’t be too cross.” Bill slowly nodded, keeping his eyes on Jewel. He could not believe this was happening. Deep down he hoped it was something else, prayed it was one of Jewel’s petty problems that made him come to love her so.
“Bill,” she started “the last time we were together … ” She stopped and a big grin spread on her face.
“the last time we were together … was, the most single beautiful wonderful thing to ever happen to me.” She looked up into Bill’s eyes hoping to see if he felt the same. Bill looked back at her with a sad smile. Jewel looked down, her grin was gone and the moment of joy gone with it.
“But Bill, things have happened since then.” Bill braced himself but was surprise to feel this anger coming from inside him. It was the same feeling he had when his mom was with that other man. Bill was not mad at Jewel but he felt sorry for whatever name he was about to hear.
“Bill I … I’m” She began to choke back sobs. Bill, although against his better judgment, scooted closer to her and pulled Jewel to him. Even though she has hurt him so terribly he still could not she her so distraught.
“Go on, it’s ok” Bill said as he stroked her back. She nodded; wanting to feel Bill’s warmth a little longer she snuggled in closer. Then with a deep breath she pulled back and looked Bill straight in the eyes. “Bill, I’m pregnant.”
Out of all the situations this one did not even cross his mind. Now he was mad at Jewel. He sighed out looking away from Jewel. He scooted away from her and tried to hide just how hurt he was.
“Bill?” Jewel sobbed softly going to reach for his hand. Bill jerked it away and turned so he was completely facing the opposite wall to Jewel. Tears stung the corners of his eyes.
“How long ago?” Bill stated with a cool unfeeling tone that hid his pain. Jewel with so much hurt in her voice whispered, “I have only known for a few weeks if that’s what you mean.”
After many moments of high-strung silence Bill mustered the courage to speak again but only with a simple painful question.
“Why Jewel?” he practically whispered.
“I don’t understand,” Jewel started until Bill’s quick movements stopped her. He threw himself up and turned to where she was, standing right in front of Jewel, pain pouring off of him.
“Why would you do this to me Jewel! Why! I want to know!” Bill stated very sternly. Confusion was spread all over Jewel’s face.
“Bill, I did not choose for this to happen.” Jewel’s temper was starting to rise.
“Yes this part,” he motioned to her stomach, “you had no control of, but, but” Bill was starting to lose control over his emotions and sat down on the sofa his head hung down.
“At least tell me who.” He softly stated giving up the argument.
“Who? Who what Bill?” Jewel, still with her temper rising, said through gritted teeth.
Bill looked at her and it caused Jewel’s face to soften, he looked so torn, broken, and sad.
“Who is the father?” Bill whispered looking down. He could not believe that after they had been through together, each of them their first time, she ran off and did the same with someone else. Maybe she had lied; maybe Bill was just another game, a challenge till she could have him. This was far more painful than he had expected.
“Bill,” Jewel started with a small laugh “Bill I don’t think you understand.” Bill looked at her hoping for an answer.
“Bill I am pregnant, but Bill, it’s yours.” Bill quickly looked up at Jewel. Jewel sat there unsure of what Bill was thinking. Bill breathed a heavy sigh and looked down, then quickly back up at Jewel. Realization finally dawning on him he responded. “Me?” Jewel gave a small smile and nodded. Bill gave out a breathy laugh and put his hand in his hair.
“That means,” he quickly looked back at Jewel “I’m going to be a father.”
“Yes, are you cross?”
“Am I cross?!” Bill exclaimed grabbing Jewel by the hands a pulling her off the sofa. “I could not be more happy, I have never been this happy in my entire life!” Jewel gave off a huge grin and a little giggle.
“I was afraid you would not want to have a baby.” Jewel slowly said as she wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Jewel I want everything with you! We are going to be parents I can’t believe it!” Bill swept Jewel off her feet in a large embrace and spun them around. Bill chuckled and Jewel gave off little giggles. Bill slowed down until they were at a stand still. Bill smiled and looked down at her then quickly panic spread across his face.
“Oh Jewel I’m so sorry did that hurt the baby?” He said quickly placing one of his hands on Jewel’s stomach and the other on her cheek.
“Don’t be ridiculous Bill, the baby is only a few weeks old.” Jewel said in her usual spunky attitude. Bill sighed in relief and looked up at Jewel. She looked up at him with half eyelids. Bill smiled, that was his Jewel, his life, his passion, his love, and now soon to be the mother of his child. Bill wrapped his arms around what was now his whole life, Jewel and their child.
Bill pulled back and he softly kissed her lips. Jewel sighed out and her eyes fluttered shut.
“I love you Jewel.” He whispered and pulled her in for a soft long kiss.
